A superb long service group having taken part in two wars. John was born in Cambusnethan, Wishaw, Lanark and enlisted and enlisted age 22 years on 19.6.1868 and trade miner. By 1897 he had been made Sergeant and revered to Private in 1880. He worked his way up to Sergeant again by April 1888. Served India 11 years 162 days and Egypt 91 days. Discharged 29.12.1893 at his own request having served 25 years 194 days. The 72nd Highlanders were in action.
