Lance Corporal Joseph Grimshaw was from Clitheroe, Lancashire. He enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment as a private soldier and sailed for Egypt on the 5th November 1914. He later joined the Machine Gun Corps and rose to the rank of Lance Corporal. His Distinguished Conduct Medal appeared in the London Gazette 11th March 1920. The citation for the award was as follows.
“During the period 17 September – 11 November 1918 during the attack on Bruyelles on 5 November, he maintained an adequate fire without interruption though his gun position was under intense shell fire. His gallantry and skilful leadership saved many casualties.
