John was born in Monkley, Bideford, Devon and enlisted 11.11.1842, he served with the 61st the whole term taking part in the Punjab campaign, medal and two clasps. The regiment suffering 11 men killed and over 100 wounded at the battle for Chillianwalla. In 1849 he is part of the force under Lieutenant Colonel J. Bradshaw C.B, to Yusafzai to collect revenue from the village of Sanghao, one of only 75 North West Frontier medals to the 61st. He served with the regiment in the Indian Mutiny no clasp medal awarded. His address on the North West Frontier roll is given as ‘Orphan Working School, Haverstock Hill, London’ He was finally discharged at Pembroke Dock and his intended place of residence was Monklee, Devon. Served 21 years, 68 days and appeared 27 times in the regimental defaulters’ book hence no L.S. & G.C.
